A careful inspection helps you understand what you are buying. Whether it is your first car or an upgrade, use this checklist when viewing a pre-owned vehicle.
Exterior and tyres
Inspect the car in good lighting. Look for dents, scratches, uneven panel gaps, and differences in paint finish. These observations may need further investigation; they do not establish the vehicle’s history by themselves.
Check the tyres for uneven wear, cracks, and visible damage. Ask about the spare wheel and the tools supplied with the car.
Interior and controls
Examine the seats, dashboard, roof lining, and luggage area. Test the air conditioning, windows, lights, locks, and infotainment controls. Confirm which features are fitted and working rather than relying only on a model description.
Engine and test drive
Ask to hear the engine start, preferably from cold when possible. During the test drive, pay attention to unusual noises, vibrations, steering behaviour, braking, and gear changes.
Records and vehicle history
Review the available registration, insurance, and service information. Compare the vehicle’s identifying details with its documents. Treat odometer readings alongside service records and overall condition.
